Jim Helman is CTO at MovieLabs, a technology joint venture of five major Hollywood studios. At MovieLabs, he leads technical work on the 2030 Vision for media creation in the cloud and has driven industry initiatives for the studios including the establishment of worldwide standards for high dynamic range video. Helman also led the design and implementation of the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR), for which he won an Engineering, Science and Technology Emmy.

Prior to MovieLabs, Helman was chief software architect at Liberate Technologies, where he led the development of an early platform for delivering the Internet to televisions. Before that he worked at Silicon Graphics, developing real-time 3D systems for VR, location-based entertainment, and visual simulation. He’s also consulted extensively, including for Xerox PARC and for NEC Research Labs, where he helped raise TSA and venture funding for an AI computer vision spin off.

Helman holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in applied physics from Stanford and a B.A. in physics and math from Washington University.
