Mark Thomas is a senior staff researcher at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco with a background in the capture, coding, transport, perception, and rendering of multichannel audio for both professional and consumer. He graduated from Imperial College London with an MEng in 2006 and a PhD in 2010, prior to starting an industry career at Microsoft Research, Redmond in 2011. There, Thomas contributed to spatial capture and rendering for consumer products including Kinect One, Hololens, and Surface. In 2015, he moved to Dolby Laboratories, contributing to the capture and coding of Higher Order Ambisonics, audio for cinema, audio coding, and most recently as a research lead on Dolby Atmos FlexConnect.

Outside work, Thomas enjoys music production, playing piano in his new band Aurora Paradigm, home theater, Hi-Fi, photography, and making/breaking things in his workshop.
